How the dates work

Four dates stand between buying a dividend stock and seeing the cash. Only one of them decides whether you get paid.

01

Buy by the close

The last day to buy and still be paid: the trading day before the ex-date.

02

Ex-dividend date

Buy from this day on and the seller keeps this payment. The price usually drops by about the dividend at the open.

03

Record date

The company checks who owns the shares. Since US trades settle in one day (May 2024), it is usually the same day as the ex-date.

04

Pay date

Cash lands in your account, typically two to four weeks later.

Questions

Which stocks go ex-dividend in February 2027?

81 of the US stocks and ETFs we cover go ex-dividend in February 2027. The highest yields are United Parcel Service (UPS, 6.06%), Pfizer Inc. (PFE, 5.64%), Ford Motor Company (F, 4.90%), Novo Nordisk A/S (NVO, 4.50%), ONEOK Inc. (OKE, 4.41%).

What is an ex-dividend date?

It is the first day a stock trades without its next dividend. To be paid, you need to own the shares by the close of the trading day before. Buy on the ex-date or later and the seller keeps that payment.

If I buy a stock on the ex-dividend date, do I get the dividend?

No. You have to buy before the ex-date. Since US trades settle in one business day (May 2024), the ex-date and the record date are usually the same day, so the last day to buy is the trading day before.

Does a stock drop by the dividend on the ex-dividend date?

By most of it, not all. On 14,012 ex-dividend days of US stocks and ETFs from January 4, 2016 to September 24, 2026, the price opened a median 85.5 cents lower for each $1 of dividend, and 90.8 cents lower once the S&P 500’s move that day is taken out. It opened down by the full dividend or more 43.7% of the time. Bigger payouts came closer to the full drop: for dividends of at least 1% of the price, the median was 95.0 cents. How are the estimated dates calculated?

When a company has not announced its next date yet, we step forward from its last ex-dividend date by its usual rhythm — monthly, quarterly, twice a year or yearly — and move weekend dates to the Friday. Estimated dates are marked with a hollow dot and can move by a few days once the company announces them.

Covers the US stocks and ETFs with an analysis page on Portfolio Terminal. Confirmed dates come from company announcements via Yahoo Finance; estimated dates follow each company’s payment rhythm and can move by a few days. Yields use the latest dividend against the last price. Refreshed twice a day. Not investment advice.
