The short version: Meta (META) closed at $744.10 on Wednesday, September 23, 2026, 35.3% above its close of $549.90 on August 21. That is its biggest one-month gain since February 2024. Over the same 22 sessions, the Nasdaq Composite rose 2.9% and the S&P 500 0.4%. The spark was not glasses but software: Muse, an AI agent Meta launched on September 8. Then, on the 23rd, Mark Zuckerberg took the stage at Connect 2026 with the hardware meant to carry it, led by $1,299.99 VR Glasses.
Here is what moved the stock, what Meta actually launched, and what a 35% month means if Meta is in your portfolio, directly or through an index fund. Live figures, key facts and the price chart are on Meta's analysis page.

Two sessions did about half of the work. Together, September 9 and September 21 compound to +18.63%; the other 20 sessions of the month added +14.07%. The September 21 jump, +11.34%, was Meta's best day since April 9, 2025, when the whole market leapt on the tariff pause. It came from two things at once: Wells Fargo analyst Ken Gawrelski raised his target from $640 to $796, and Muse reached No. 1 on Apple's US App Store.
The starting point matters too. In late July Meta was the stock investors were worried about: second-quarter revenue grew 28% to $60.8 billion, but costs and expenses grew 55%, and free cash flow fell to $784 million for the quarter. The shares lost 7.95% the next day. The settlement with 29 states over harm to young users, announced August 26, was large, but it ended a trial that had been hanging over the stock. From the August 18 low of $543.67, the stock is up 36.87%.
Muse: the product the market is paying for
Muse is an AI agent, not a chatbot: Meta pitches it as something that does tasks, sending emails, booking travel, filling in forms, and keeps going after you close the app. It launched on September 8 with a free tier and paid plans at $20 and $100 a month.
That pricing is why investors cared. Meta has spent two years telling shareholders that its AI spending would pay off; a subscription that people download in large numbers is the first direct evidence. Mizuho's Lloyd Walmsley called the launch a meaningful step toward showing a return on that spending. At Connect, Evercore ISI's Mark Mahaney summed up the mood: "Muse over Metaverse is a good thing for META investors."
Meta has not published Muse user numbers or revenue yet. Until it does, the App Store ranking is the only hard signal, and a download is not a paying subscriber.
What Meta showed at Connect 2026
Zuckerberg opened Connect on September 23 from Menlo Park. The common thread: glasses are how Muse leaves the phone.

Meta VR Glasses: a headset that tries to look like glasses
The headline product. Meta VR Glasses weigh about 100 grams on the face, which Meta says is five times lighter than a Meta Quest 3, because the computer moves off your head into a puck linked by a thin optical cable. They use micro-OLED displays, pancake lenses and full-color passthrough, run on a Qualcomm Snapdragon Reality Elite chip, are controlled with your eyes and hands, and come with IMAX Enhanced certification and Disney+ films in 3D. Price: $1,299.99, on sale in spring 2027.
For scale, a Quest 3 costs about $600 and an Apple Vision Pro about $3,700. Early hands-on reports flag the trade-off: the field of view is narrower than a Quest's, so full virtual reality feels less immersive, while watching films and working on virtual screens is what the device is built for. The chip inside comes from Qualcomm.
The glasses that already sell
- Ray-Ban Meta Gen 3, from $449 according to Engadget: slimmer, with an action button, longer battery life and a 12-megapixel camera.
- Ray-Ban Meta Audio, from $349: Meta's first glasses with no camera, voice and open-ear audio only, an answer to the privacy complaints that follow camera glasses.
- Meta Adventurer, from $249: the first pair sold under Meta's own brand.
- Meta Ray-Ban Display, the pair with a screen in the lens, now sold online in the US at $799 and arriving in Germany, France and Italy on October 13.
- A hearing feature for adults with mild to moderate hearing loss, cleared by the FDA, for $149.99 (HSA/FSA eligible), in the US later in 2026.
Meta also said Muse is coming to its glasses in the next few months, and showed Muse Charm, a small pocket device for talking to the agent, without a price or a date.
Do glasses matter for the stock?
Not much yet, in dollars. Almost all of Meta's revenue is still advertising, and Reality Labs, the division that makes glasses and headsets, lost $4.6 billion in the second quarter alone. Meta does not report glasses sales separately. What Connect changes is the story: KeyBanc's Justin Patterson called glasses "a 2 billion user opportunity", and each pair is a device that runs Meta's AI instead of Apple's or Google's. That is a long-dated bet, and the first shipping date for the new VR Glasses is six months away.
The bill that comes with the rally

- Spending. Meta expects $130–145 billion of capital spending in 2026, mostly data centers and chips for AI. Second-quarter capex was $31.1 billion, 83% more than a year earlier. Operating margin fell to 31% from 43%.
- Cash. Free cash flow was $784 million in the quarter, next to $15.8 billion of net income: nearly all the cash the business makes is going back into AI.
- The settlement. Meta will book a $10 billion charge in the third quarter; the deal is worth up to $18 billion over ten years, part of it only if YouTube and TikTok adopt similar limits.
- Valuation. At $744.10, Meta trades at 28.0 times its last 12 months of earnings and 21.3 times expected earnings, a market value of about $1.90 trillion. What a P/E ratio tells you, and what it doesn't explains the gap between the two. The price is still 5.81% below the record close of $790 on August 12, 2025.
Most of this was known in July; the stock has since gained 27% from its pre-earnings close. The difference is that the market now believes Muse can turn the spending into revenue. For a direct comparison with the other ad-and-AI giant, see Alphabet vs Meta and Alphabet's analysis.
What happened after Meta's other 30% months
A 35% month is rare, but not new for Meta. We looked for every time since the 2012 listing that the stock's one-month (22-session) gain first crossed 30%, and what it did next.

| Nov. 26, 2012 | +34.3% | +3.6% | +72.8% |

| May 5, 2020 | +30.9% | +20.6% | +52.1% |
| Aug. 26, 2020 | +30.1% | −8.9% | +19.9% |
| Dec. 5, 2022 | +35.2% | +51.1% | +159.3% |

Twelve months later, the stock was higher after 6 of the 7. Three months later, it was lower after 2, by up to 8.88%. Two cautions. Seven cases is a tiny sample. And it comes from a company that went on to become one of the most valuable in the world; the same test on a stock that later failed would read very differently. Momentum after a big month is a tendency, not a rule.
What a 35% month means for your portfolio
If you own Meta directly, the position is now a larger share of your portfolio than it was a month ago, without you buying anything. A 5% position in late August is about 6.6% today if everything else stood still. Whether that is fine depends on how much of the rest also rides on big tech, which is where most portfolios are more concentrated than they look. Is my portfolio actually diversified? shows how to check.
If you own an index fund, you own Meta anyway. It is one of the largest holdings of the S&P 500 and of the Nasdaq-100 fund QQQ, and it did much of the lifting in the two sessions after the Fed week. Your fund and your individual stocks may be the same bet twice.
Either way, a stock that rises 35% in a month can fall fast too: Meta lost more than 60% in 2022 when rates rose and investors doubted the metaverse spending. Here is what two recent shocks would do to your own holdings:
