Month by month

Earnings come in seasons: most companies report in the three to six weeks after a quarter ends. The bars show each month’s shape.

> your reports

Hundreds of companies report this season. You own a handful.

Import what you own and Portfolio Terminal lists the reports that touch your money: which day, before the open or after the close, and how much of your portfolio is riding on each. Free, in your browser.

How to read a report

Four things decide how a stock moves on earnings day. The headline profit is only the second.

01

When it lands

Before the 9:30 open, the price reacts at the bell. After the 4:00 close, it moves in after-hours trading and the next morning.

02

Earnings per share

Profit divided by shares. The market compares it with the consensus — the average of analysts’ estimates — not with last year.

03

Revenue

Sales for the quarter. A beat on profit from cost cuts, with revenue short of estimates, is read as a weaker quarter.

04

Guidance

What the company expects next. It often moves the price more than the quarter itself: a beat with a cut outlook usually falls.

Questions

Which companies report earnings this week?

8 of the US companies we cover report in the next ten trading days; the largest are Micron Technology (MU) on September 30, PepsiCo Inc. (PEP) on October 8, Accenture plc (ACN) on October 1. Pick a day above to see who reports before the open and who reports after the close.

What does “before the open” and “after the close” mean?

US markets trade from 9:30 am to 4:00 pm New York time. Most companies publish results outside those hours: before the open, so the price reacts at the opening bell, or after the close, so it moves in after-hours trading and at the next open.

What is an EPS estimate?

The average of analysts’ forecasts for earnings per share that quarter, also called the consensus. A company “beats” when it reports more than the consensus and “misses” when it reports less. The market reacts to the gap, not to the raw number.

How often is this calendar updated?

Twice a day. Confirmed dates were announced by the company; estimated dates sit a quarter after the last report and are marked with a hollow dot until the company confirms them.

Also on the calendar: ex-dividend dates

Covers the US stocks with an analysis page on Portfolio Terminal. Report dates, times and consensus estimates come from Yahoo Finance. Confirmed dates were announced by the company; estimated ones sit a quarter after the last report and usually move by a few days. Times are New York. Refreshed twice a day. Not investment advice.
