Portfolio Terminal's market data, inside your AI assistant

Portfolio Terminal runs a free MCP server. Add one URL to Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor or Claude Code, and your assistant can look up dated key facts on 443 tickers, what an ETF holds, how two ETFs overlap, which funds and famous investors hold a stock, five-year comparisons, and the dividend and earnings calendars. Every answer comes with the page it was taken from, so each figure can be checked.

What it does, and what it never does

rules
  • Read-only and public: every tool answers from a page anyone can open on portfolio-terminal.com. It never sees, asks for or stores a portfolio.
  • No account and no key. Nothing to sign up for, nothing to revoke.
  • Every figure is dated, and every answer carries the URL of the page it came from, which your assistant is asked to cite.
  • Information, not advice: the server tells the assistant to describe what the data says and never to tell anyone to buy or sell.
  • Fair use: 60 requests a minute per network, 20 of them for the lookups that fetch market prices.
  • Sources: daily prices from Yahoo Finance, each issuer's full holdings file, the funds' SEC N-PORT reports and the investors' SEC Form 13F filings.
04Questions

What people ask before adding it

questions5 answered

What is an MCP server?

MCP (Model Context Protocol) is the standard AI assistants use to call outside tools. An MCP server is a list of tools behind one URL: once you add the URL, the assistant decides when a question needs one of them, calls it, and answers from what comes back.

Can the assistant see my portfolio through it?

No. The server only answers from public pages of portfolio-terminal.com: stocks, ETFs, overlaps, calendars. Your portfolio stays in your Portfolio Terminal account, which the server cannot read.

Is it free?

Yes, with no account and no key. It is limited per network so it stays fast for everyone, the same way the public pages are.

Which tickers does it cover?

Key facts and comparisons cover 392 US stocks, 30 ETFs, 17 cryptocurrencies and 4 commodity futures. ETF holdings cover the 30 most-searched US ETFs from their issuers, and about forty more funds from SEC N-PORT. "Who holds" works on any US-listed stock in those funds.

Which version of MCP does it speak?

Streamable HTTP, the current 2026-07-28 revision as well as 2025-03-26, 2025-06-18 and 2025-11-25, which most assistants still use. Answers are plain JSON, with no session to keep open.
